Biography of Chief Oyiatuigbo Obiagwu

Born to Chief Obiagwu Ogige Chukwu and Late Madam Akuagwu Obiagwu in 1857, Chief Oyiatuigbo Obiagwu was the renowned charismatic leader and chief of Awka Etiti whose leadership qualities made him an enigma of a sort to his contemporaries and the government of the time.

Chief Oyiatuigbo was certified the warrant Chief of Awka Etiti in 1915. His astuteness and honesty earned him a permanent seat in the then Nnobi judicial council from 1915 until his demise in 1955. Being a man of integrity with peaceful disposition, he played a critical role in resolving the age-long crises between his chiefdom and the neighbouring towns.  In collaboration with the Chiefs of Nnewi and Azigbo, the lingering land dispute among the three communities was amicably settled, thus the famous landmark Obenano was established in 1920. Chief Oyiatuigbo’s leadership style earned him the respect and recognition of the District Officer (D.O) D.P.J Gardener during the time of Lord Luggard

Chief Oyiatuigbo Obiagwu's dexterity in handling issues also extended to his family life. He successfully managed five wives and many children in a harmonious home environment worthy of emulation.

The late Chief, Nwoke Teghete, Okwulu-Oka, Oputa Okwu Ebi of his time, the man whose name typifies the uniqueness, resilience, ambience, doggedness, fearlessness, resoluteness, and the tenacity of the Igbo man and the Awka Etitian in particular “Oyiatuigbo” –The Igbo man is hardly intimidated-
